Gym Floor Care & Refinishing in the DMV

Athletic floors are held to a standard no other floor in a building has to meet: they have to be safe to fall on, predictable to pivot on, and durable enough to survive equipment being dragged across them.

Gymnasium hardwood floor after screening and refinishing
Overview

Gym Floor Care

A gymnasium floor is a sports surface first and a floor second. Slip resistance is a safety property, not an aesthetic one, and the wrong product on a wood athletic floor can change how a shoe grips — which is a genuine injury risk, not a cosmetic complaint.

Office Care provides both the day-to-day maintenance that preserves an athletic finish and the periodic screening and refinishing that restores it, using EPA-approved, athletic-grade products.

Scope

What we provide

Daily work is usually folded into the facility’s janitorial scope; refinishing is scheduled around the athletic calendar.

  • Daily dust mopping to remove abrasive grit before it is ground in
  • Tacking and damp maintenance using products approved for athletic finishes
  • Screen and recoat — abrading the existing finish and applying fresh coats
  • Full refinishing where the finish has worn through
  • Court and fitness-area maintenance scheduling around the season
  • EPA-approved, athletic-grade product selection throughout

Screening and recoating vs. full refinishing

Screening abrades the top of the existing finish just enough for a new coat to bond, then adds fresh coats. It restores appearance and slip characteristics without touching the wood, and it is dramatically less expensive and less disruptive than sanding.

Full refinishing goes to bare wood and is warranted only when the finish has actually worn through or the floor has been damaged. Keeping to a screening cycle is what postpones that job — sometimes by many years.

Dust mopping is the whole game

Nothing in gym floor care matters as much as removing grit daily. Court shoes press whatever is on the surface directly into the finish; a week of skipped dust mopping does more measurable damage than a month of heavy play on a clean floor.

This is also the cheapest part of the program, which makes it the easiest to quietly drop when staffing is tight — and the most expensive omission on this page.

Scheduling around the season

Refinishing needs the floor out of service while coats cure, which for most schools and community facilities means summer or a long break. Booking that window early is the difference between refinishing on schedule and deferring a year.

We plan athletic floor work around your calendar and confirm the cure window before the crew is scheduled.
